Independent Release

Review by Tony Cannella

The UK’s Cryptic Age features a melding of several different metal genres, Folk, Symphonic, Progressive, Power and even a bit of Thrash are all represented on their new 5-song EP “Homeland”. The epic 8-minute opener “Homeland” gets us started. The soprano vocals of Jenny Green are quite powerful and effective. This song has a decidedly Symphonic Metal influence and even displays a little thrash metal near the end. The next track “On the Bare Cold Ground” starts off with a slower tempo before a slow, grinding metal riff comes in and the song transforms into a galloping metal track. Other highlights include: “Bring Down the Sky”, the instrumental “No Folkin’ Way” and the EP’s closing track “Paragons of War”. Kudos is definitely well deserved for Cryptic Age who manages to incorporate different influences while still being able to maintain a sense of coherency on “Homeland”.

Review by Tony Cannella

From the Ukraine, Mizantropia plays a hybrid of extreme gothic metal, black metal, melodic power, symphonic metal and sprinklings of traditional heavy metal added here and there, got all that? Just issued is their debut album, “Along the Lonesome Alley” and here is a perfect example of a band that totally took me by surprise, in a good way. Mizantropia primarily sings in their native Ukrainian language with bits of English at certain parts throughout the 53-minute album. Lead vocals are shared by Ekaterina Sinegina and Sergey Mushta (who has since left the band) on extreme, screaming vocals. Musically, the songs on “Along the Lonesome Alley” are not as chaotic and brutal as one might think; Mizantropia walks a fine line between heaviness, beautifully structured songs, atmosphere and melody. Ekaterina’s vocals soar right there along with the music and combined with male screamer Sergey Mushta the duo create quite a tandem. Mizantropia were another band that was previously unbeknownst to me.  It is great to see some stellar metal coming from such varied parts of the globe. I for one am always happy to sample young and talented bands such as Mizantropia and “Along the Lonesome Alley” had me impressed from the moment I began listening.

Review by Tony Cannella

Formed in Maryland in 2005, Cassandra Syndrome are a band that have a lot to say. Their debut release - available now on Figmental Records - is titled “of Patriots And Tyrants” and it features the powerful soprano vocals of Irene Jericho in conjunction with some seriously heavy and melodic guitar work, and in short “of Patriots and Tyrants” (the title of which comes from a part of a quote from the third president of the United States and author of the Declaration of Independence Thomas Jefferson), is a beautiful work of art that is a bit different than a lot of bands with female operatic singers.  The CD features 10-songs and 47-minutes worth of some really cool operatic metal with some great guitar riffs and an overall killer sound. CD opener “Phoenix” gets the ball rolling and it is a mid-tempo track, that features a grinding guitar riff and the impressive vocals of Irene Jericho. The next track “None but Shadows” is another strong number that really picks up the pace and it is a huge highlight for me. The lyrics are excellent as well with their politically and socially conscious tone of the songs, Cassandra Syndrome have something a little different to offer. Another thing to admire about Cassandra Syndrome are the vocals of Irene Jericho. She definitely has the opera thing going, but she doesn’t over-do-it, she knows when to hold back a little and do whatever is best for the song, and with Cassandra Syndrome the songs are the number one thing. The perfect example of this is the song “Mirror Mirror”, which is hands down my favorite track at the moment. Other highlights include: “What We Sow”, “Burning”, “Soma”, “Wild” and “Cassandra”.The U.S. is not as known for this genre of music like say Finland or Norway is, but Cassandra Syndrome have released a fantastic album that could very well hold it’s own with just about any other band. “of Patriots and Tyrants” is a tremendously satisfying effort that is worthy of repeated listenings.

Independent Release

Review by Tony Cannella

Yet another band from Italy. Astral Dive are 5-piece female fronted band that play a strong mix of symphonic and progressive metal. Their band line-up is currently: Chiara Manese (vocals), Damiano Pierucci (drums), Giovanni Vescovini (keyboards), Federico Agresti (bass) and Gianmarco Lotti (guitars). They have just released their EP Trauma” and it is a strong out put that really sets a high standard for the up-and-coming Italian band. The intro track “EXP1” kicks things off and has a futuristic, machine-like feel to it. It sets the table for the first track “The Astral Dive”. This song opens with a great riff that is rock solid and relentless. When the soprano vocals of Chiara Manese kicks in we are off and running. The vocals and the music absolutely soars to create a great big, energetic wall of sound. Things continue on the right path with the next song “Gathering of Lost Thoughts”. This song really gets moving right away. It starts off with a very up-tempo feel to it, and it is impossible to stay still while listening to it. This song features a few changes in the tempo, but the energy remains the same throughout and is a definite highlight. Chiara’s vocals are really breathtaking on this one. The next song, I would describe as almost an epic ballad in feel. At 8-minutes long “The Restless” is the longest song, but it never fails to hold your attention. It starts of with some piano and the soft, beautiful vocals of Chiara come in. It pretty much remains a ballad throughout, but it has a dark, melancholic and pretty feel to it. It is a very good song and one that is difficult to describe. It must be heard. The final song “Land of Unquestioned Answers” is a perfect way to wrap things up on high note. The songs are very well written with equal care given to the music and lyrics. Overall I enjoyed this CD immensely. The songs are very good, the production is crisp and clean and the performances by the band members are first rate. The band shows a lot of promise and professionalism and are already well on their way to a stellar career. “Trauma”features 5-songs and 26-minutes worth of music that is of a very high caliber. The band are currently working on their first full length CD and I can’t wait to hear what they come up with next.
