Webzine dedicated to the metal band fronted by girls. We also like ambient, darkwave, rock & electronic music.

AlthoughWeeping Silence’s line up had to cope with some important changes (see Rachel & Joseph Grech departures’ - both band singers), it was right to give some space to this chef d’oevre. “For the Unsung” is the third album by this Maltese Gothic Doom band and they have simply “delivered the finest album of their career thus far”. The intention of the band is “utilize the tried-and-true method of beauty and the beast vocals” and they do it with success! Though a doubt for the future remains as Tony states : “only time will tell how this change will affect the band as they move forward”.

Shoegaze/post-rock lovers please let’s bow to a masterpiece. Well, I’m talking about the second album by Brighton based Esben and the Witch called “Wash Sins Not Only the Face” out on today via Matador Records. Luisa, who got the task to review it, was totally fascinated by this release that she states : ““Wash Sins Not Only The Face”s a very refined, elegant record” and in particular was mesmerized by “Slow Wave” because of its song structure “it has fascinating guitar riffs, will take you on a real trip in the evening shade”. A little advice for the listeners from Luisa : “I deeply advice to experience in the dark with your eyes closed and alone”. Click in the link below for enter this fascinating world

From Malta, Weeping Silence first formed way back in 1995. In 2008 they released their full-length debut titled “End of an Era” which was followed in 2009 with a 4-song promo CD. Now the band returns with their sophomore effort dubbed “Theatre of Life” and to say that this band is really starting to come into their own is an understatement. Musically, “Theatre of Life” hones Weeping Silence’s Symphonic Gothic metal style and sees them take what has begun on their 2008 debut to the next level. Also taken to the next level is their songwriting, which continues to grow and flourish. Although there are only 8-songs on “Theatre of Life”, the whole thing clocks in at a healthy 47-minutes, and while musically there are some dirge-like moments, there are also times when the band speeds up the tempo a bit, often times throughout the course of the same song, (the excellent “Within White Walls” is a perfect example of this). Lead vocalist Rachel Grech continues to establish herself as one of the unheralded voices in the Femme Metal genre and she is only getting better. The title song “Theatre of Life” is one of my favorites and it features a choir on the chorus that definitely gives it a ‘theatre’ vibe and highlights the huge-ness of the song (this track also features a cool solo at the end of the song). The track “Season’s Journey” begins as a ballad before the heavy riffs comes crashing in. Still this is a slower song tempo-wise and singer Rachel does another great job on this one, at times she kind of reminds me of Sharon den Adel from Within Temptation, but only at certain moments. Fans who were lucky to snatch up their 4-song 2009 promo CD will notice that those four songs appear here in re-recorded form. The whole thing is pretty consistent throughout starting with the opening duo of “Of Light and Shadow” and “Dark Waters” and concluding with the 7 and a half minute finale “Innocent Cries”. The band also manages to work in choirs and symphonic parts to go along with the heavy doom style riffs. How Weeping Silence has managed to fly under-the-radar these last few years is beyond me. Hopefully with the help of “Theatre of Life”, this is one band that will not go unnoticed for much longer. They have the talent and skill to really make a mark in the metal world.

From Chicago, Illinois, the band Solarsphere plays melodic symphonic metal, adding a touch of other influences here-and-there to create their debut 3-song demo. Solarsphere is led by vocalist Rachel Sabine. She has got a beautiful, melodic slightly operatic style to her voice. “Eternal Hunter” opens the CD. This is a good start and my favorite of the 3-songs. Starting off with drums, bass and Rachel’s vocals, the song slowly builds as a rock solid guitar riff joins in. This song has loads of atmosphere (thanks in part to the haunting keyboard arrangement) and a simply addicting melody. “Eternal Hunter” is a Beautiful start to the 13-minute demo. Next is “Sick Pleasure” and it is really not too different stylistically than the previous song. Rachel’s voice sounds great and the song is perhaps a bit heavier, but if you liked the first song, than “Sick Pleasure” does nothing to bring the quality down. The final song, “Inner Demons” is perhaps my least favorite song, but it still packs quite a punch and is the heaviest thing on here. On their debut demo, Solarsphere plays symphonic metal with all the conviction of a veteran band. This is a positive step in the right direction for this young Chicago band.

As the title may suggest, in this record The Reasoning turn their old songs in acoustic pieces, very atmospheric and sometimes even more beautiful than the original ones. Deprived of their prog structure, the songs have to stand alone and they succed. This means a very high quality of the original compositions. Listen for example “In the Future” from their 2008 “Dark Angel”, it has a warm sound and sometimes it seems even richer, especially in the instrumental breaks. I have to say that the songs are not completely stripped down, there are still drums, bass guitar, keyboards but obviously the guitars are not distorted. The harp in the beginning of “Script Switch Trigger” is just lovely and lends to the track a fairy-ish atmosphere together with delicate Rachel’s vocals. Sometimes she duets with another male vocalist, the one she replaces in the previous album and the two are perfectly complementary. Enchanting is “The Nobody Effect” which has become a very nice ballad retaining the uplifting feeling in the chorus. The closing track “Within Cold Glass” has a nice folk-rock feeling to it which has been unveiled by the acoustic arrangement.

From Malta, Weeping Silence plays symphonic power metal with goth and doom undertones. In 2008, the band released their full-length debut, “End of an Era”, now Weeping Silence are back with a new 4-song, 25-minute promo CD. The 4-songs contained on the promo CD feature sweeping, epic arrangements and intricately played musicianship. Rachel Grech leads the way with her strong and clear vocal style. The opener, “Promises Broken” begins with a heavy riff and develops into a mid-paced tempo of an opener and immediately the full scope of this talented band is on display. Lead vocalist, Rachel Grech has a nice range as her vocals soar over the excellent musicianship.“Dark Waters” and “Within White Walls” are exceptional as well. The final track, “Innocent Cries” is over 7-minutes long and it brings the CD to a rousing conclusion. I have never been familiar with Weeping Silence prior to hearing this excellent promo CD but now I am a fan. With their promo CD, Weeping Silence combines all of the elements that I look for in a band. I am sure that Weeping Silence will appeal to fans of the symphonic power metal genre. At only 25-minutes long the CD is all too short, but it definitely serves its purpose in getting fans excited for the next full-length from Weeping Silence.
