After releasing two EPs, the Modern Gothic Metal band November-7 has issued their full-length debut, “Season 3”. November-7 is another fine example of a band that comes out of nowhere and leaves a great impression. The rumbling opening guitar riff sets the stage for “Her Name” to get “Season 3” off to a raucous start. “In My Mind” keeps things going in a strong way and the vocals of Italian front lady Annamaria Cozza are just phenomenal, she adds a great deal of depth and emotion to the songs. “Angel” starts off with a slower tempo, but quickly brings forth the heaviness. “Parasite” is a song full of attitude and swagger, and quickly became one of my favorites. Other highlights include: “Nowhere”, “Untie Your Hands”, “In Love With Hate”, “Falling Down” and “World in Agony”. I have no idea what I was expecting, but November-7 really blew me away with “Season 3”.

The Melodic Progressive metal band from France, Heonia has previously released a 4-song EP titled “Simulacra”. That EP offered a taste of what this band is capable of. Those aspirations have now been realized with the release of their full-length debut “Winsome Scar”. Thankfully on “Winsome Scar”, Heonia continues to incorporate strong doses of melody and changing tempos. Of course the cool vocals of Marieke are at the fore but keyboardist Damien also chimes in from time-to-time with his grunt vocals. The music on “Winsome Scar” is also complex with a bit of symphonic influences present felt as well. “The Chase” sets things off and running with an atmospheric, symphonic vibe before the tempo slowly builds into a fast pasted opening number. “Requiem for the Night” follows that up with a brief intro before the tempo once again picks up and this evolves into one of the heaviest numbers on “Winsome Scar” before changing tempo several times and giving it an epic feel. Other highlights include: “Desire”, “Fears”, “Mirror of Life” and the album closer “Loneliness”. “Broken Toys” is my favorite track. The song changes tempos several times and is a very dramatic sounding song; “Broken Toys” is a perfect example of the strong material that Heonia has to offer. After the impressive 4-song EP “Simulacra” I was curious to see if Heonia could follow that up with an equally astounding full-length. Fortunately they have done just that. “Winsome Scar” is a job well done by this very talented French band.
