Australia’s Gothic Metal duo Temujin released their debut effort “1000 Tears” in 2008. Now, three years later they have returned with a brand-new single. The song is called “Demons” and coming off the positive impression that their debut left on me, I couldn’t wait to sink my teeth into this one. “Demons” is the lone track on the single, but it is a pretty good track with haunting vocals performed by Kelly and a simply infectious melody that dominates the four minute song. It is difficult to tell where a band is headed musically based on one song, but if “Demons” is indicative of where Temujin are headed than fans of their debut will not be disappointed.

Sad Alice Said began in 2005 as an all female outfit called Alice In Wonderland. Since changing the name, the band has undergone some line-up changes and not features a multi-gender line-up. Sad Alice Said recently signed to BlueFreya Music has just issued their debut single for the song “Open Your Eyes”. “Open Your Eyes” begins with some nice piano before transforming into a melodic, Symphonic Metal piece and a song that is not easy to forget once you’ve heard it. The track is 4-minutes long and lead vocalist Alisa Shakor provides an outstanding vocal range throughout, and the usage of violins helps to give it a melancholic vibe. I know it’s only one song, but “Open Your Eyes” has me more than a little interested in what Sad Alice Said has in store on their future recordings.

Italy’s greatest metal export Lacuna Coil returns with their 6th album. It’s been almost 3-years since they released “Shallow Life” to mixed reviews. Their new album “Dark Adrenaline” sees the band getting back to basics and rocking out, with their trademark vocal duels between Cristina Scabbia and Andrea Ferro and the band has never sounded better. With all due respect to their more recent outputs, my favorite Lacuna Coil albums have always been their first EP and “In a Reverie” and I always found it strange that the band never plays (or even acknowledges) any songs from those albums these days. Don’t get me wrong, I have liked – for the most part – what came after, there has certainly been much, much more good than bad in regards to their music. Having said that, in my opinion “Dark Adrenaline” is the best and most consistent Lacuna Coil album since “In a Reverie”. The proof is in the material, like the album opener “Trip the Darkness”. This is a great opener that just screams ‘we’re back’. “Against You”, “Upside Down” and “End of Time” are all potent tracks, especially “End of Time”. This would make a great second video in my opinion. This is just a great, melodic mid-tempo song, which reminded me why I fell in love with this band in the first place. “I Don’t Believe in Tomorrow” brings back the power and heavy riffs. “Intoxicated” is a fist pumping, head banger of a track that really gets the blood pumping, which the next track “The Army Inside” is more than happy to continue with that style and even includes a great guitar solo. There is even a cover of the REM track “Losing My Religion”, done in Lacuna Coil style, if I may say so; I think this leaves the original in the dust. “Dark Adrenaline” is an impressive return to form by Lacuna Coil and it made me a huge fan once again. 2012 is off to a great start!

Review by Si Smith

Apparently Iwrestledabearonce don’t play by the rules. Except their own. What comes out the other end is a mixed up hash of electronics, screaming and breakdowns. But not as you would expect. The album begins with “Next Visible Delicious”, by stating its purpose clearly and precisely. It is as in your face as your own nose. Starting with computer age electronics it soon breaks into deathcore shrieks and then mellows into a nicely lilted sung portion by vocalist Krysta. Guitars remain with an industrial sound before the inevitable breakdowns kick in and there is a return to the electronics from the intro. If the first track is anything to go by, we are in for anything but a smooth ride! After this the album shifts into more recognisable metalcore territory with “You Know That Ain’t Them Dog’s Real Voice”, but again interspersed with melodic sung passages. Musically the riffs are busy and still involve breakdowns and electronics. But there is enough of a sense of humour injected here and there to suggest that there is more to Iwrestledabearonce than simple metalcore. Lyrically things are a little more confusing. The song never comes to a real climax or conclusion. “Deodorant Can’t Fix Ugly” is as fun as the title suggests, the humour definitely helping to lift the band from the average. Musically this track is refreshing at this point, just when the shrieks become a little jarring, a different group vocal comes in. “The Head Music Makes My Eyes Rain” is the nearest thing to a ballad on the album and once again serves up something different. Metalcore terrain slams us in the face with the next track “It Is Bro Isn’t It”, although the slower clean vocals sound much better than the male equivalent in songs such as this one. “Gold Jacket, Green Jacket” presents us with a melodic yet extremely heavy chorus and gang vocals add a new touch to this song. “Break It Down Comancho” allows for some balladic singing parts where Krysta can really show off her melodic vocal lines. “Stay to the Right” contains some remarkably dissonant riffs for people who like that sort of thing. “I’m Gonna Shoot” once again breaks the mold, starting slow and building up to a roving riff then the breakdowns and electronics return. The album’s first single “Karate Nipples” is as schizoid as the rest, taking what you know of genres and mashing them into metalcore madness. “Button It Up” does what it says on the tin, and effectively closes the album with more of the same, complete with growling riffs and swirling electronics. Iwrestledabearonce have stated that they want to offer “a release and reprieve from all of the world’s madness.” Granted this kind of guttural core music can offer a release of pent up emotion, expressing as it does a variety of moods along the way. But for this reviewer it seems very much a reflection of the world’s madness rather than a reprieve from it. If you go with the band’s mission statement and keep an open mind, then this will be a greatly liberating album. If you have more of an idea of how you would like your music to sound then you may be disappointed. But maybe that’s just what Iwrestledabearonce want. To break your rules.

Review by Tony Cannella

Frantic Amber is an all female metal band from Sweden. Their style is fast, loud, heavy and –to say the least – abrasive. Their 5-song EP “Wrath of Judgement” has just been made available, and if you can’t get enough of the aggressive stuff, than Frantic Amber is a band that is worth investigating. From the outset, Frantic Amber grabs the listeners’ attention as the guttural vocals of Elizabeth takes control on the pounding opening track “Wrath of Judgement”. “Bloodlust” is next and packs a huge wallop with its forceful energy and drive. Throughout the course of this 17-minute CD, Frantic Amber knows only one direction and that is pure brutality and heaviness. The next track, “The Awakening” is business as usual until near the end of the song where the band throws in something a little different as the tempo slows down, and clean female vocals come in. That explanation I’m sure does not do it justice, but it was a surprising moment that just comes out of nowhere. “Unbreakable” begins with a deliberate, doomy riff before the song settles into a steady pounding groove. “Doomed to Walk the Earth” brings “Wrath of Judgement” to a conclusion after only 17-minutes. Heavy? Aggressive? Brutal? Yes! Yes! Yes! Frantic Amber delivers an intense metal onslaught on their EP “Wrath of Judgement”. I would never profess to being an extreme metal aficionado but Frantic Amber is definitely a band that I would say is worthy of attention.
