Label : Relapse Records

Review by Tony Cannella

When it comes to music, I am very much a child of the 80s. That is when I first discovered my love for all things metal and when I got my musical education, not that it matters much. I still love metal, but reserve a special place in my heart to any band whose style harkens back to that glorious time in metal. The second album from Washington’s Christian Mistress (titled “Possession”), definitely piqued my interest for this reason. Now, nostalgia can only take you so far, and realizing this is now 2012 you have to bring something current and relevant to the table and that is exactly what Christian Mistress does on “Possession”. Sure there is no lack of 80s-isms, but “Possession” also possesses (no pun intended, okay maybe a little bit) all the fire and energy of any band that has emerged in recent history. I don’t know why but I always associate the label Relapse with Death and Metal Core bands so that is half what I was expecting when played the “Possession” album. From the frenzied thrash-like opening of “Over & Over” I knew I was wrong and was instantly captivated by the sound emanating from my speakers. Christian Mistress mixes thrash, traditional heavy metal and NWOBHM influences throughout the course of “Possession”. Songs like “Cross and Crucifix”, “Conviction” and “The Way Beyond” are fine examples of this, whilst the song “Possession” has a definite early Black Sabbath vibe with the opening guitar riff and doomy feeling. The opening riff to “Black to Gold” had a definite Paul Di’Anno era Iron Maiden vibe to it, and it is also one of the main highlights for me. “There Is Nowhere” gives the listener a chance to catch their breath at the beginning and is the closest thing to a ballad on “Possession”. It does have its heavy parts and the song changes tempo several times before speeding up and bringing the song to a frantic conclusion. So, all I can say it that any preconceive notions I might have had were put aside after listening to this 41-minute slice of pure metal heaven. Sure it’s not perfect but Christian Mistress is a band that would sound good in any decade, and “Possession” sure isn’t lacking of vitality and power.

Independent Release

Review by Tony Cannella

U.N.S.I.N. is an eclectic modern metal band hailing from Greece. On their debut EP “0154” the band displays their aggressive, melodic metal style with hugely positive results. The bombastic opener “Up” sets things in motion, this song features a heavy and thoroughly pounding riff that dominates the song. “Unseen” is next and continues in the same heavy direction as the previous number. Vocalist Christine Nikolaidou has got an excellent voice that just totally took me by surprise. Her singing style is clean and it just soars right there with the music. The final two tracks “Acid” and “The Show” brings this EP to a close and I was left wanting more. U.N.S.I.N. is a band that really came out of nowhere and floored me. Of course it is a shame that “0154” features only 4-songs and about 17-minutes worth of music but it has really made me hungry for when this band releases a full-length. If U.N.S.I.N. are able to find the right label to support them on their impending full-length, then there should be no stopping them.

Review by Tony Cannella

I can’t think of a more male dominated genre of music than death metal. Thankfully artists such as Angela Gossow of Arch Enemy and Sabina Classen of Holy Moses just to name a few have stepped to the forefront and shattered the Death Metal or Extreme Metal stereotype. One of the newer bands to emerge on to the Death Metal scene is Toronto, Canada’s Pyrrah. The band is fronted by 18-year old female vocalist Christine P. Newman. She is joined by George (Lead/Rhythm Guitar), David W. (Bass) and Dave (Drums). The band play an extremely bombastic brand of technical Death Metal, with Emilie Christine P. Newman’s guttural vocals leading the way. Pyrrah have just issued their 4-song EP “Eternal Cremation” and man this should appeal to anyone who likes their metal extreme.  The opening track “Bestial Plague” kicks things into gear with a cool opening guitar solo as the song really gets going and in come the brutal vocals of Emilie Christine. Her vocals are very strong and a driving force in the band. The song is just straight-forward brutality and the band pretty much doesn’t stray too much from their chosen path. The guitar work is also quite impressive with lead guitarist George adding a technical almost virtuoso flair to his solos and guitar riffs. His solos in particular are very good and hard to ignore. “The Lake of Burning Suffering” is next and it opens with a positively fierce guitar riff that chugs along as the rest of the members join in. The song is powerful and definitely heavy. “Human Debris” is next and once again it begins with a great guitar riff as the vocals of Emilie Christina comes in and just crushes. The final track is the almost 8-minute “Sleepwalkers”. This is probably the most technically proficient of all of the songs on this disc and it also happens to be my favorite. The song features some cool time changes that are really different from anything else on the CD. The break and guitar solo near the end almost reminded me of something on the first Iron Maiden album. Very cool and an excellent way to end things. “Eternal Cremation” features 4-songs and 26-minutes worth of some quality Death Metal by this up-and-coming Toronto band. I will be the first to admit that I am absolutely no authority on death metal but it seems to me that Pyrrah has a unique way of writing songs, especially when it comes to the guitar parts and solos. “Eternal Cremation” is a seriously heavy, ass-kicker of a CD.
