Interview by Lindz Riot

In America you wouldn’t ever even begin to think a gothic metal band would come from their lands. Sure, Europe is very well known for producing favourites like Within Temptation and Nightwish, and we have been lucky enough to get the alternative act We Are the Fallen from California! America needs to brace itself for a brave band from Oklahoma City who are mastering the European metal sound with an angelical siren named Julia. They are called Angelical Tears and they describe themselves at angelical vocals with demonic guitars. You have to hear them for yourself! Their recently released EP is very impressive. Here’s what Julia has to say about her journey with the band so far.
Hello Julia and welcome to the Femme Metal Webzine, thanks so much for taking the time do this interview with us. First of all I would love to know the origin of Angelical Tears. When and where did it all start and how did the band come to be?
Well, Angelical Tears was born around Halloween time 4 years ago in Oklahoma city to fill a void it had in the symphonic female fronted metal scene.
After taking a good listen to your songs I feel as if they are fantasy based, but that could just be because of your sound. What are the stories behind your songs? Are they true stories?
I try to write my lyrics that are based on real life – my experience or my friend’s life stories.
So regarding your live show: what is the music scene like in Oklahoma? How have your shows and fans been? How long have you been playing live for anyways?
If we were a country ensemble the music scene in Oklahoma would be amazing. The rock and especially the metal scenes are practically non-existent. Most of the time we end up playing shows with hard-core metal bands. Because the scene is so undeveloped here we get better reception outside of Oklahoma.
From what I hear your sound is very much like that of the music coming out of Europe. What bands have inspired Angelical Tears as a whole?
Each band member had its own inspiration some love classical musical, some dig heavy metal. And of course European metal with female singers is something that we all like. Bands like Lacuna Coil, Within Temptation and so on definitely in some way has inspired us to write our stuff.
So I wanted to say congrats on the Australian distribution and the release of your self titled EP! It’s really great stuff. How are you finding the response has been to these 6 songs?
The response has been great, especially in Europe. Hungary and Romania have been quite receptive.
What is the song writing process like for Angelical Tears? Who mostly writes the music and who is the main lyricist?
We all try to write music and lyrics. But mostly I write lyrics and the guys write the music. Each one of us tries to contribute whatever he/she can during the creative process.
My favourite song is “Tomorrow Happens Now”, if you don’t mind telling me what’s the story behind it? What is your favourite song and why?
“Tomorrow Happens Now” – that song is about wanting that special someone to be with you right now in the moment. Dreaming about that person, but he’s far away and you don’t know when you are going to meet him/her again. It’s hard to say which song is my favourite. They are all meaningful to me and have their own story.

Australia’s Gothic Metal duo Temujin released their debut effort “1000 Tears” in 2008. Now, three years later they have returned with a brand-new single. The song is called “Demons” and coming off the positive impression that their debut left on me, I couldn’t wait to sink my teeth into this one. “Demons” is the lone track on the single, but it is a pretty good track with haunting vocals performed by Kelly and a simply infectious melody that dominates the four minute song. It is difficult to tell where a band is headed musically based on one song, but if “Demons” is indicative of where Temujin are headed than fans of their debut will not be disappointed.

Sad Alice Said began in 2005 as an all female outfit called Alice In Wonderland. Since changing the name, the band has undergone some line-up changes and not features a multi-gender line-up. Sad Alice Said recently signed to BlueFreya Music has just issued their debut single for the song “Open Your Eyes”. “Open Your Eyes” begins with some nice piano before transforming into a melodic, Symphonic Metal piece and a song that is not easy to forget once you’ve heard it. The track is 4-minutes long and lead vocalist Alisa Shakor provides an outstanding vocal range throughout, and the usage of violins helps to give it a melancholic vibe. I know it’s only one song, but “Open Your Eyes” has me more than a little interested in what Sad Alice Said has in store on their future recordings.

Frantic Amber is an all female metal band from Sweden. Their style is fast, loud, heavy and –to say the least – abrasive. Their 5-song EP “Wrath of Judgement” has just been made available, and if you can’t get enough of the aggressive stuff, than Frantic Amber is a band that is worth investigating. From the outset, Frantic Amber grabs the listeners’ attention as the guttural vocals of Elizabeth takes control on the pounding opening track “Wrath of Judgement”. “Bloodlust” is next and packs a huge wallop with its forceful energy and drive. Throughout the course of this 17-minute CD, Frantic Amber knows only one direction and that is pure brutality and heaviness. The next track, “The Awakening” is business as usual until near the end of the song where the band throws in something a little different as the tempo slows down, and clean female vocals come in. That explanation I’m sure does not do it justice, but it was a surprising moment that just comes out of nowhere. “Unbreakable” begins with a deliberate, doomy riff before the song settles into a steady pounding groove. “Doomed to Walk the Earth” brings “Wrath of Judgement” to a conclusion after only 17-minutes. Heavy? Aggressive? Brutal? Yes! Yes! Yes! Frantic Amber delivers an intense metal onslaught on their EP “Wrath of Judgement”. I would never profess to being an extreme metal aficionado but Frantic Amber is definitely a band that I would say is worthy of attention.

Fateless Tears just released their new single, “Dawn’s Oblivion” and here we are with this short 3-track EP .The title track showcases the band characteristics: prog metal with heavy riffs, catchy melodies and S. Lee Baysinger vocals on top of them. “Stasis” is an acoustic version of the song, which features calm guitars and keyboards and smooth female and male vocals soar through the music. Everything is so sweet. Last track, “Standing Still”, is a ballad, short but effective. Above all, it is fascinating how the the lead vocals and the backing vocals merge in an emotional mix. Given this preview, the full-length will be one not to be missed!
